A horror story Or, a tale of triumph and glory, by KatieLynne Once upon a time there was a sandwich wrap, sitting in a cooler in a convenience store much like the one at the end of your street. Inside of this sandwich wrap, inside of a little coil of lettuce, there were three little eggs. They first cracked out of their eggs when it was cold, and even though there was a big piece of meat beside them, the conditions were too unfavourable, so they coiled up in their little shell and went into hibernation. Now, amid a whole pile of movement and shuffling around, they found themselves in a really warm place, so they came out of their shells and grabbed onto the wall moving by with their little claw feet. It was really really warm, and there was a big flow of nutrients moving by, right under their feet. Susan coughed a little bit. She had been feeling good, but there was a slight scratching in her throat now. She decided to have some nice warm tea to see if that helped. It was warm and dark where they were, and this big flow of liquid came by, and it was full of sugar, yay! And they grew and they grew, and they burrowed their little legs into little nodules inside of the lining above their food source. And they grew and they ate and they stayed there, with all of the air and the solid stuff moving past. And then when they were ready, they waited until it was quiet and there wasn’t much movement, because their instincts told them that they needed to wait for the right time in the circadian cycle to come out of their pods. And they clawed their way out and moved up to where the air was coming from, and one of them climbed through a sticky membrane, and it was hard but they dug in with their little claws and pulled through, and the others made their way out through the big opening and pulled their way out through the closed seam, two girls and a boy. And they crawled out and opened up their little wings beneath their shells, and they flew on up and followed eachother, to this little room that they found, with nutrients all over the place. And they frolicked and played until the girls got bigger and bigger, and then they waited until it was quiet and dark again, and they found a place to lay their eggs, and it was the same place that they had come from! And there was lots of other places to lay their eggs, and they followed the sources of carbon dioxide, and one of them was wide open even and making sound, and they laid their eggs in all of them to make sure that they hatched, and they went and played some more. Susan’s throat was scratchy again. It had felt like it was getting better for a few days, but now it had come back, seemingly worse, and the rest of the family was coming down with the same sickness that she just had. She decided that they would all call in sick for a few days, and she would make some tea for the whole family. And soon, all of them emerged, to the sounds of screaming and coughing, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of them 😊 The end.
