Squash Palace

The most creative house ever

A short tale of one of the greatest houses I've ever lived in.

Squash Palace, as it was lovingly called, was a house with very small rooms, and equally small rent. About 300 per month? Aw yeah. You have about 15 feet by 8 feet though, barely, just barely enough to put the bedroll in, but it was glorious, and filled with friendly folk. And artistic, as you may imagine.

Take a look at the pictures, it's just... interesting! Over every squas square inch of the house was art. Knittings, paintings, memorabilia, hobbits in the basement! Just about everything that you can imagine is here, is here.

Give this page like 5 minutes to load, there's 72 photos in here, and I honestly wasn't really able to pare that down, there's just that much. So observe, scroll down, check it out. Arguably the greatest house ever, filled with the art of hundreds of people, myself included ^_^

And yes, I added my own piece of Metroid art to the walls ^_^ . The names of the residents at the time were also added to the squash palace family tree, after that photo was taken though. I'm sure at this point, more names and art have been added still ^_^

The kitchen, lots of stuff on the walls. There's text 'you can do anything you want all the time' written over five pictures. Another angle of the kitchen Yet another angle, but with a window in this one. A corner of the kitchen
Another angle Me standing in the kitchen Showing the bottom half of the kitchen, like same pics as before but showing the floor too. There's stuff on the walls even down here. More kitchen
Still more kitchen The oven and dishwasher area The dining table, theres lots of stuff on the table, and a snack basket. The pantry, with a giant painting of vegetables on a wall.
A giant banner that says FOOD is along a wall. The other half of the food banner, and shelves full of dry goods. The pantry window section, very little in this pic. There's a little beaded fish toy on the window trim in the pantry.
The lower part of the pantry window The bottom half of the vegetable wall painting The pantry, and the back of the door, also with vegetable paintings. The corner of the pantry that's the most crammed with food
The bottom of the pantry window, wow I really wanted to document this place. The livingroom couch, with an Adventure Time mural painted behind it. Another corner of the living room, with papers posted on the wall and occasional painting. A giant knitted banner saying soupstock, over the livingroom window
Lots of artifacts and drawings and papers on the wall. Another corner, with more thigns posted on the wall The other couch, paintings and stuff on the wall behind it. The floor of the livingroom
Another section of the livingroom floor. There's stuff against the walls, a bicycle rim, miscellanea. Leading up to the kitchen, and showing the painting supplies corner The painting supplies corner, desk by the window, and one of the couches The door to the basement, with a giant cutout of the hobbits inside.
Looking down into the basement The washing machine and clothing racks. Cleaning supplies and a generally dark, concrete, messy corner. Mattresses and belongings piled up near a wall.
Looking into the basement, stuff piled up along the wall. Furniture, ski equipment, boxes. This is a corner Another corner, with less stuff, and it says 'snek' on the wall, written a number of times here and there. An air conditioner or some other such device sitting against a wall
A concrete pillar with paint cans at its base. A corner piled with furniture and bags and bins. The stairs leading up. Buckets are visible behind it. The front entrance, with jackets hung up.
The outside door, with 'sous les pave's la plages' written on the inside, and a big map on the wall beside A better look at that big map, of africa. The word 'beau' written above a bedroom door The bottom of that door, and the stairs leading to the upper floor
A vent on the other side of the stairs The shoe rack The bottom of the front door The wall leading to upstairs, with a large mural of... something eclectic, a large spider creature perhaps. More paintings are on the wall behind it.
The other side of the stairs wall, with paintings on canvas up on it, and a wooden turtle. The bottom half of that wall, with Squash Family Tree written at the bottom. At some point after this photo was taken, myself and the others living there at the time added our names to it. A large modern art painting of faces and other lines and circles, mainly green and blue in nature, titled 'we have a bird' by dyck brother, and with Kabutroid's metroid painting beneath it. A closeup of the Metroid, playfully saying squee, upon the wall of the art house.
A large drawing of... a closeup of a plant structure maybe, and also various printouts and drawings are up on the wall. Another corner of the stairs, with drawings up on the walls The upstairs rooms, with prayer flags over the doors, and things posted on the walls and doors of course. Looking at one of the doors and prayer flags. A large hansa hand wall hanging is between two doors.
A green curtain covering where all the towels and blankets are kept. Also a pile of spare clothes for anyone to take. The words 'gentle action' knitted into a piece of brown cloth, over the bathroom door Some of the printouts and paintings in the bathroom, there's tons here too. More wall hangings. Something in another language, a sketch-like painting of a flower.
My own room, with the finger board climbing trainer above the door, and a few clothes hung on a nail on the wall. The upper half of Kabutroid's room, showing her hat, chainmaille kit on a shelf, and a box of assorted belongings The other half of the room, showing the window with tibetan prayer flags above, as well as the sewing desk that served ask Kabutroid's desk. The shelving on the other wall, with a clock, mirror, some books, a purse, the nest for her dragons and their adoption scrolls, an electric tea kettle, and a bike seat.
Looking from the far corner back towards the door, with several stuffies on the shelves, a picture of her parents, her bike helmet hanging off of the bike seat's post, and a calendar The bottom of the door, barely able to open all the way in this squashed palace, and her laundry hamper. The bottom of Kabutroid's room, showing the eponymous floor mattress, her bags, the salt lamp on the ground, and some of the right wall's shelving The right wall shelving, with a purse, a thistle growing in a pot, a feather, her smudge kit, tingsha, and singing bowl.
