Gotta love those hidden pits. And before you ask, there's multiple different ways that the edge of that cliffside can avoid falling down. Let's go with the most obvious answer of "there's floating platforms in this world as is".

Metroid, Samus, Kraid, and the rest of 'em are all property of Nintendo, who to my knowledge wouldn't do anything such as sue me or shut poor Planet Zebeth down, because they're so damn nice, and Metroid kicks ass : }
